Greece floods map: Areas hit by heavy rainfall explained

FURTHER storms have hit Greece where hundreds of Brits are stranded following flash floods.

Thousands of residents have had to evacuate their homes and two people have been reported dead.

Where is the flooding in Greece?

Since Monday, September 4, 2023, Storm Daniel has triggered landslides, caused buildings to collapse, and carried away dozens of cars in muddy waters.

Greece has taken the brunt of the storm, with some areas experiencing more than 2 feet of rain in just hours.

Forecasters believe this could become the worst rain event in Greece's history.

More intense rainfall is expected in the country over the coming days, which leads to concerns of even worse flooding.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated travel guidance for Brits looking to head out to the region.

It now reads: "Adverse weather conditions, including floods, are affecting some regions. The situation can change quickly. Follow 112 Greece on Twitter for official updates."

One tourist stranded by the weather, Emma Taylor said: "This is a serious storm - flooding in our hotel corridors, ceilings, power cuts, and we're lucky as we're up high at the Skiathos Palace, Koukounaries.

"Some guests have been asked to check out of their rooms."

Volos

Parts of Volos and surrounding areas are without electricity and roads have collapsed due to the floods.

One man died on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, after a wall collapsed on him - while five people were reported missing, most likely swept away by floodwater.

The fire brigade also reported another death of which was an elderly woman who was recovered close to a seaside community in the southern Pelion area near the port city of Volos on Wednesday.

Around 94 residents were moved to safety after torrential rain damaged part of their nursing home, ERT reports.

Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias urged people to stay indoors.

Greek police have issued a traffic ban for the Magnesia region, where Volos is located.
